Sasa palmata -'PALMATA BAMBOO'
  (Nebulosa)
Fast spreader in USDA Climate Zone 7.

Plant introduction number (PI) into the U.S. 75169

Average mature size  . 5" x  7'      Hardy to  -5 F
Prefers Shaded Sites

This little bamboo from Japan really adds the tropical feel to any garden. Its leaves are arranged in a palm shaped fashion. With its leaves measuring  up to 15 inches long by 2.5 inches wide, it is a great addition to any garden. Handles all planting sites with wind and drought conditions not being a problem. Young shoots can be eaten and the foliage is highly used in decorations. I have two reports back now from 4 year plantings in zone 5 that is one has remained evergreen to -10 to -15 degrees.

At this time I still would recommend this species for USDA Climate Zones 6 and warmer.

This species is beautiful and has a more tropical look than
 your traditional larger bamboo.

Sasa palmata

The thick, leathery leaves are up to 15 inches long by 2 1/2
inches wide. Some of our customers are growing this species
for use in live flower arrangements.

Beautiful full leaves of Sasa palmata.

It is hardy as far north as Boston and grows taller in cool climates. Here in the south, ours is about 8 feet tall. It does well in pots and looks best when grown in the shade.  Leaves wither around the margins and at the tips in very cold weather but will be replaced by fresh greenery in the spring.

Sasa palmata is ideal for stabilizing river banks and used in reclamation schemes. In areas where extensive logging is taking place, this and other bamboos can be a useful material in preventing the loss of valuable topsoil.
