Bamboo Identification

We have many species of bamboo available that are currently growing throughout North America. We have added this page to help you in selecting or indentifying some species. Many species of bamboo can be identified by color, size or unique marking. However all bamboo species has unique shoots when they emerge in the spring. Here is the simple anatomy of a bamboo shoot. Many of these attributes are absent on some species and more prevalent in other which aid in identification.

Spring is when new shoots emerge. This is an excellent time to identify bamboo, but still can be difficult. The new bamboo shoots in the springtime are a sight of great beauty. The color and form of these new bamboo are simply amazing. We hope you enjoy the some a few photo of the new shoots.

This little bamboo is medium height and very cold hardy.

Great cold hardy bamboo with beautiful yellow stripes.
Beautiful foliage and even in cold zone 5. This bamboo
can grow to over 20 feet in height at maturity.

This super cold hardy bamboo is our number one selling screening bamboo. Growing

This cold hardy bamboo grows excellent in the north. It grows to a medium height in colder areas usually around 12 to 18 feet depending on the climate zone.

This giant timber bamboo is the largest cold hardy
bamboo on earth. It does well in climate zone 7 where
 winter temperatures do not drop into the single digits.
 It can grow to 75 feet tall and be over 7 inches in diameter.

This cultivar has been in the U.S. for just a few years
and is therefore fairly scarce. After a bamboo has been in the country
 for many years and gets well established, divisions from the large groves
are available. Once all this has occurred, the price will come down.
Mature size under ideal growth is 70 feet by 5 inches in diameter.

A really beautiful bamboo when mature. It will take several
years for your grove to begin showing the black stripes on
the canes, but it is worth the wait. This giant timber bamboo
can reach 54 feet by 3.5 inches in diameter under ideal conditions.
