Phyllostachys aurea

Phyllostachys aurea
 'GOLDEN BAMBOO'

Plant introduction number (PI) into the U.S. 75153

Average mature size  2+" x  27 to 35  feet in height
Hardy to  0 F    Aggressive in full sun

Best Screening Bamboo
A prime choice for privacy screening or a bamboo fence. A  fast grower in warm climate zones, but less aggressive in colder climates. It is growing well in New York's climate zone 6. Provides a thick impenetrable grove when untrimmed. The culm nodes are compacted giving this species a great look on larger culms. On small plants and often on mature size culm this species has low growing limbs. This species is very drought hardy. Light green canes turning golden when exposed to sun light. The culms ( canes) are very strong and upright. The culms sheaths are pale/green to pale/red. The auricles and oral setae are absent from the sheaths.
In colder regions, this species forms  tight groves versus the more open groves  in warmer climate zones. Culms are excellent wood quality and the new shoots are edible. In some micro climates of zone 6, this species does not remain evergreen. This beautiful bamboo will drop foliage when temps drop to around 5 degrees F. Canes will most likely be killed when temps drop to -5. Unless temps drop to -30 degrees F. the root system of established well mulched groves will put up new canes each Spring.
I recommend this species for USDA Climate Zones 6 and warmer.

In USDA Climate Zone 7 expect mature size canes to be over 30 feet. in height.
In USDA Climate Zone 6 expect mature size canes to be 16 feet in height.

YELLOW GROOVE BAMBOO'

Plant introduction number (PI) into the U.S. 55713

Great for Privacy Screening
Average mature size 2.0" x  40'        Hardy to  -15 F
 Aggressive in  full sun

One of our top picks for very cold areas in need of privacy screening. I have measured this species at 46 feet and 2.6 inches in diameter in climate zone 7. We have customers growing this cold hardy species in parts of Minnesota. The culm (cane) sheaths are pale green with creamy streaks. Auricles and oral setae are present on mid culm. Can be absent on lower and upper portions of the culms. A very upright species at maturity. Less aggressive in cooler climates.  Yellow Groove is from Jiangsu and Zhejiang in east China.

This species is doing very well in the Missouri Botanical Gardens, Logan, Iowa and Grand Island Nebraska. One of our customers in zone 3b/4a Wisconsin where temperatures have gone to -30  reported his 'yellow groove' dies back in the Winter months. It comes back each Spring 6 to 8 feet tall from a 5 year old planting. Reports back to us this year that it is  doing great at the University of Minnesota Arboretum.

It averages 10 to 12 feet in height by .75 inch diameter at the Denver Zoo after12 years and appears that this will be the mature average height at that elevation and climate zone 5.

In USDA Climate Zone 7 expect mature size canes to be over 40 feet in height.
In USDA Climate Zone 6 expect mature size canes to be 18 feet in height.
In USDA Climate Zone 5 expect mature size canes to be 12 to 14 feet in height.

In USDA Climate Zone 4 expect mature size canes to be 8 feet in height.

I recommend this species for USDA Climate Zones 5 and warmer.

A beautiful collector species not commonly available. This species adds a splash of color with a beautiful yellow and green bamboo fence. Very cold hardy with growing habits similar to 'Yellow Groove'. Bright yellow coloration of the canes with the green  stripe in the sulcus grooves is absolutely beautiful.  This species handles windy sites much better than 'Yellow Groove and is at the top of the list on cold hardiness.

I recommend this species for USDA Climate Zones 5 and warmer.

Great buy on these large fast growing timber bamboo.

In my groves and the ones I have seen 90% of the culms ( canes ) are very straight and grow to a large timber size. We have measured the canes of this species at 3.5 inches in diameter and right at 60 feet in height. This species is from Guangdong, China and has been here since 1924. The new shoots are edible and in fact very tasty.  It is  a fast growing giant! Rare in cultivation this beauty looks tough. Very strong appearing with lush dark green foliage. One of the giant bamboo with canes that are very hard, making very high quality wood.
This bamboo is highly prized for use in construction and crafts. Culm (canes) sheaths are a pretty green/reddish coloration. The sheath auricles and oral setae are very distinct. It has the strongest branches of any Phyllostachys. As with most other species, the maximum size will not be obtained in colder climate zones.

I have grown this species for years and had several discussions with knowledgeable bamboo nursery  thus arriving at the above comments and factors about 'crookstem'.  This bamboo is easy to control with just root pruning and has wide culm spacing in  loamy soil. Crookstem  is rare in most areas of the country. It also has the low limb characteristics on canes under 2 inch in diameter. So as your grove establishes for the first 3 to 5 years you will have thick foliage nearly to the ground. You can see this by clicking on the picture and going to our photo page.

I recommend this species for USDA Climate Zones 6 and warmer.

In USDA Climate Zone 7 & 8 expect mature size canes to be  50 feet in height.
In USDA Climate Zone 6 expect mature size canes to be 12 to 18 feet in height.

Privacy Screening

We have customers through out northern climate zones growing this little beauty.  A very cold hardy vigorous grower with dark gray green canes. Likes most all sites and soil conditions. The culm (cane) sheaths' auricles and oral setae are present with a narrow blade. Mature culms are erect and usually in the 16 to 18 foot height range. Has a very dense dark green  foliage making it an excellent choice for privacy and windbreaks.  Bissetii originally came from Sichuan, China.

This species has been growing for over 12 years at the Denver Zoo.  The zoo is at climate zone 5 and above 5000 feet in elevation.  At this site bissetii reaches only 10 to 12 feet in height by .50 inch diameter. It will remain evergreen once the rhizome system is well established.

In USDA Climate Zone 7 expect mature size canes to be over 30 feet. in height.
In USDA Climate Zone 6 expect mature size canes to be 18 feet in height.
In USDA Climate Zone 5 expect mature size canes to be 12 feet in height.

We sell out of this one and many others. Check for availability and have several different types of bamboo on your list when you call.

This is one of the top five most sought after bamboo we provide. Plenty of pictures on this beauty. The legendary 'Black' is native to Taiwan and China it can withstand temps. to -4 F. Top and foliage damage occurs in the low teens during dry winds. New canes emerge green and turn ebony black within two years.  The culm sheath have wavy blades with prominent oral setae, auricles and ligules.
Likes most all planting sites, but should be protected from wind if possible. This is reportable the only species the culm turns true ebony in color. The culms are not as erect as some other species and tend to weep or arch over.

Legging up is recommended and I will be happy to discuss this with you. We can provide valuable tips to help make your grove beautiful.

Reducing the amount of top foliage helps the culms to be more erect and actually makes the bamboo very attractive. The wood is of high quality and used by many craftsmen. Plant in sheltered sites from winter winds.  Mulch new plantings very heavy with 6 to 12 inches. Foliage loss at 0 to -5 degrees F.  with complete top kill of canes at around -10 to -15 degrees F.  This species is marginal in growth height and diameter in climate zones 9.

I recommend this species for USDA Climate Zones 7 and 8.  It is being grown successfully in climate zone 6  with moderate top damage during the winter months.

In USDA Climate Zone 7 expect mature size canes to be over 30 feet in height.
In USDA Climate Zone 6 expect mature size canes to be 16 feet in height.

 'RED MARGIN BAMBOO'

Plant introduction number (PI) into the U.S. 77000
Average mature size  2.75" x 55'      Hardy to -10 F
Aggressive in full sun

One of our top Screening Bamboo for cold climates.

This past year  P. rubro was the most sought after bamboo we supplied. It has beautiful green canes with long nodes. Very hardy bamboo that makes a great screen and is growing well in climate zone 5. This one is doing well above 5000 feet in cold Denver, CO.  The culm (cane) sheaths are olive color with fine reddish striping. The culm sheath borders have the pronounced red margin. Sheath auricles and oral setae are absent. The ligule is dark red in color. Handles salt spray well. This great bamboo will provide a screening effect in shaded areas and we have the groves to prove it!

One of our customers in Shoal, Indiana reported his rubro  did not drop leaves at -15 degrees F. from his 6 year old planting. It has already attained 20 feet in height.

Customer reports from as far back as 1998 keep us informed on rubro. all over the U.S.  In zone 6 it has attained 35 feet in height  X 2 plus inches in diameter while being exposed to -12  degrees F.

In USDA Climate Zone 7 expect mature size canes to be over 50 feet. in height.
In USDA Climate Zone 6 expect mature size canes to be 20 to 30 feet in height.

Privacy Screening

This bamboo is native to South Korea and Japan. A  favorite for screening with height restrictions and is extremely shade tolerant.  It will average 12 to 16 feet, in most areas of the country, with foliage beginning as low as one foot. It can grow very dense if not thinned providing a very lush green screening effect. Grows very fast and is cold hardy. It works very well for stabilizing creek banks and other wash areas. We have reports back from our customers in zones 6 that this one will remain evergreen to -10 degrees F. when well mulched.  Handles salt spray well.

This one is wind and salt tolerant.

I recommend this species for USDA Climate Zones 6 and warmer.

Privacy Screening, great
for a short bamboo screen

This is a great screening bamboo since it seems to stay in the 8 to 14 foot height range. Some climate zones report it reaching 25 feet in height, but I have not seen these sizes.  It makes a thick grove with full foliage reaching down the canes to a couple feet off the ground.  This species has quasi  persistent culm sheaths.

Great species to help prevent erosion

Great Privacy Screening for 8 to 10 feet
This bamboo has the largest leaves of any bamboo in cultivation in the U.S. It adapts to all planting sites. They can be up to 24 " X 4" They are truly large leaves and have many uses. For example Chinese and Japanese have used them in cooking by wrapping food in them prior to steaming. They also are currently being used in floral arrangements.
This species is used in many countries for erosion control along flood plains. It makes a great indoor container plant since it adapts to low lighting very well. One of our groves has reached 12 feet in height along the river side of the grove. It has thousands of rhizomes (roots) hanging over in the water picking up just whatever water it needs through out our hot summer months. On new plantings this species will get leaf damage at around 0 to 5 degrees F. On older established groves it will remain evergreen to -10 with very little foliage damage.

I recommend this species for USDA Climate Zones 5 and warmer.
