Lewis Bamboo Nursery March and April 2009 |
March 2009
Tuesday, March 31st
| We had a pick-up today of some 15 gallon Black bamboo. Mike was picking this bamboo up for his boss who in turn was giving it to a business associate/friend in Houston, TX. It seems a lot of our bamboo is going to Texas these days. We appreciate the order. | ![]() |
Thursday, March 26th
![]() | This is Mr. Meadows from Willis, TX. He was visiting family in Alabama and arranged a tour while in our area. He was interested in growing some large bamboo. Here, we are showing him how well even large bamboo will grow with trees. Bamboo is a natural woodland understory plant so it plays well with trees. |
| We took a nice evening walking tour through the groves and let him decide which of the giant species that he preferred. | ![]() |
![]() | He chose Phyllostachys Vivax because of it ability to thrive in the Texas climate. Some large bamboo like the Moso is very picky about where it will attain a mature size but the vivax is not. It also is a large species that will get big fast. We appreciate the order and it was good to get to meet him. |
Tuesday 24th
| Today we were in Austin, TX delivering bamboo to Jean-Pierre. | ![]() |
![]() | He had these large metal planter constructed in his courtyard in anticipation for bamboo. |
| Phyllostachys nigra 'Henon' Giant Gray bamboo was chosen for it's beauty and ability to screen. It will be placed in the tiered planters and provide ascetics and screening from all floors of this home. We greatly appreciate your order and letting us provide bamboo for this neat project. | ![]() |
Sunday March 22nd
| Today we were visited by JoeAnn and her family. They were considering the possibility of growing bamboo as a source of income for them and future generations. | ![]() |
![]() | We took a tour through the bamboo groves, explaining how bamboo grows and it various uses. Bamboo is a great plant because of all its numerous applications and ability to reproduce itself quickly compared to other woody plants. After explaining some of the uses and potential markets for bamboo, they chose a few great species to start with. |
| They chose Phyllostachys Moso and Phyllostachys Viridis 'Robert Young' for some timber bamboos. They chose the Phyllostachys nigra 'Black' for a unique bamboo. They also chose Phyllostachys Purpurata for a cold hardy bamboo. This species can also tolerate a wet area and has a almost solid cane. We appreciate all of them being able to come out and we hope the tour was both educational and fun. Thanks. | ![]() |
Wednesday, March 18th
![]() | This is William's house right outside of downtown Atlanta, GA. This is an area that is being revitalized into a nice pedestrian community. William wanted a nice bamboo grove and screen in a backyard planting area. |
| Phyllostachys Moso is being used because of the large diameter. These plants will eventually produce plants that are 7" in diameter and 75'+ tall. Moso is very picky about where it will attain this size, but it can do it in the Southeast United States. We appreciate the order and hope you enjoy your bamboo. | ![]() |
Tuesday, March 17th
| Today we delivered some large plants to Atlanta, GA. These 65 gallon sizes of Phyllostachys Aureosulcata 'Yellow Groove' bamboo are fun sizes to handle, but really make an impact in your landscape. These bamboos are going to Planters. | ![]() |
![]() | Planters is a great landscape and architectural firm located in Atlanta, GA. They are dedicated to residential installations and designs and do a wonderful job. |
They also order some tall 15 gallon sizes to supplement the giant 65 gallon sizes. Here are a few of our plants in one of their holding area waiting to go out to the residence. They are designing a Japanese garden for one of their clients and these are large accent plants to help with the project. | ![]() |
![]() | This is the Planters location. They are a good firm and a pleasure to do business with. We recommend them for many local installations in Atlanta, GA and Highlands, N.C. |
Saturday, March 14th
![]() | Today we made a Saturday appointment for the Captain. He is a captain of an offshore mobile work platform that assist with oil exploration/production. With his schedule it was hard for him to come out during the week. We can make arrangements for weekend tours to accommodate visitors with busy schedules. |
| The captain was very excited about the chance to get to grow bamboo. Here, I am showing him about new leaf formation. Bamboo is an evergreen and this is accomplished by new foliage emerging behind existing foliage and pushing the old foliage off. This way you have foliage year around. | ![]() |
![]() | Here we are standing in a Moso grove early in the Morning. The captain was a great visitor. It is always good to see somebody excited about bamboo. |
| The captain purchased about 8 different species and promised to be back for more. I believe that he wants to have every species we grow. His enthusiasm for growing bamboo is great and it was a pleasure to get to spend time with him. Thanks for the visit and we appreciate the order. | ![]() |
Thursday, March 12th
| Today was a busy day. We had two customers coming out for pick-ups. Ross had ordered some Phyllostachys bissetii for a privacy screen. | ![]() |
![]() | Ross sent one of his truck and workers out to pick-up bamboo at our nursery. We were happy to get him loaded up and back on his way. These are going to a nice section of Birmingham, AL to provide a screen for his home. We appreciate the business. |
| Fran and Deborah drove down from Nashville, TN to purchase some bamboo for a privacy screen. It was an abnormally cold day for our area of Alabama. They purchased some Phyllostachys Aureosulcata 'Yellow Groove' bamboo . This is a great cold hardy screening bamboo that will work great in Nashville. We enjoyed your visit and hope you enjoy your bamboo. | ![]() |

Sunday, March 8th
![]() | This Sunday RG and Jerry stopped by on their way from Georgia to Mississippi. They live in GA, but have a duck hunting reserve in MS. |
| They need some small bamboo to create duck blinds. They chose Phyllostachys Humilis and Pleioblastus Linearis for short screening bamboo. These both make dense short screens under 20' tall. We appreciate their business and hope this fits their application. | ![]() |
Friday, March 6th
| Today Charles from Tennessee visited us. He needed a privacy screen for his hot tub area. His neighbor's house is higher in elevation that his so, he needed a tall bamboo to give him privacy. | ![]() |
![]() | New planting regulation in his neighborhood required him to purchase plants that were 10' or greater in initial height. He decided to purchase some of our 15 gallon Phyllostachys rubromarginata. |
| This is a very fast growing screening bamboo that works well in cold climates. We appreciate the order and hope this gives him a nice screen so he can enjoy his outdoor area. | ![]() |

| Wednesday and Thursday of this week was spent installing a bamboo barrier and screen for Mary and David. They live in the beautiful town of Peachtree, GA. However, their house is in close proximity of the neighbors. We installed a bamboo screen to provide privacy between the two residences. You can see the before and after pictures of one planting site. There was two areas planted, one below and one above the steps. You can click here to see more pictures on our bamboo barrier installation page. | |
| Notice the nice red Georgia clay. Bamboo will spread very slowly in compacted soil like this but because of property line issues a barrier was installed. It also gave us a chance to amend the soil to accelerate their screen with a nutrient rich planting medium. | |
| This is a picture of the bamboo in place and some of the amended soil. Mary and David decided on some large divisions of Phyllostachys Aureosulcata to give them an immediate impact. This is a great very straight bamboo for privacy screens. | |
| Now everybody can enjoy their deck. This bamboo will thicken up over the next few years to provide complete privacy. Thanks for the opportunity to let us help, we appreciate it and enjoyed working with you on this project. | ![]() |
