Our Bamboo News

Today we delivered to customers in Biloxi, MS. Their landscape was radically changed after hurricane Katrina. They lost over 70 trees in their yard, but had one of the few houses in the neighborhood that weathered the storm.

They are located directly on the Gulf of Mexico. You can notice the lack of trees due to the 25'+ storm surge of Katrina.

With all the new home being built, the need for a screen has become apparent. Bamboo is a great solution for quick privacy, and a solution that can withstand violent storms.

Here is Mr. Gautier with his new bamboo. The order of bamboo consisted of Moso and Golden for the customers to landscape their yard. It was a pleasure to get to meet him and his lovely wife and see their beautiful home.

Harvey, Doretta and Mark drove over from La Granges, Georgia to pickup some P. nigra 'Black' and a large pot of  'Moso'.  They wanted these two species to get them started. Doretta liked the appearance of several different species after taking a tour of our groves. Now she can mail order and know exactly what  she wants.

Above, Mark is holding onto some Phyllostachys viridis 'Robert Young' canes.
Thanks again for your order and hope you had a safe trip back to Georgia.

Jeff from Orlando made a visit to our Nursery today to pick up more plants. If you remember, we made a large delivery to him in June and the first of this month. Jeff is preparing to open his own bamboo nursery.

Jeff purchased a large quantity of Semiarundinaria okuboi seen in the first photo. This species makes a beautiful privacy screen with a maximum height of around eighteen feet.

It was a challenge, but we packed all his new plants in his enclosed 16 foot trailer.

We gave Jeff a small in-service to get him very familiar with all the plants that he has purchased. Jeff even dug a 15 gallon P. nigra 'Henon' to get the feel for digging.

We have enjoyed all our visits with Jeff and wish him the very best for
his new business.  We are very glad that he chose us to provide him with
plants and some guidance for his new endeavor.

Even though this was the hottest day on records for Walker County, Clark from Woodstock, Georgia came by to pick up some plants. He was an Horticulturist at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens a few years ago and had a lot of knowledge about bamboo. He still does design work and incorporates bamboo into his projects.

Clark had a list of several species that he wanted to get. They all were shrub bamboos and several variegated varieties.

In the background is a grove of P. japonica 'Tsutsumiana' (Green Onion). Clark had this species on his list and we have some great pots available.

This is a privacy screen using Indocalamus latifolius. The maximum height is only ten feet on this species.

Thanks again to Clark for choosing to visit and select plants from us.
We hope to be able to help him with other selections as he may need them for his design work.

Today we had the pleasure of meeting Carol and her husband Otha from Cleveland, Tennessee. Carol was real excited about bamboo and was very informed about all the species she wanted to plant.

We're talking about how the size of the mother plant makes a difference in the size of the canes that emerge in three years after planting.

Above is a small grove of P. vivax 'Aureocaulis'.

Look at the yellow grooves in the P. viridis 'Houzeau'. This is a very nice species that can attain a diameter of three inches with a height of 45 feet. Very impressive with the size and color.

Carol wanted to see some of the P. 'Moso' that Roger Sr. had molded into square canes. She had read about the project on our website. We have a few still standing that will be cut in a few months.

We really appreciate Carol and Otha braving the 103 degrees hot summer air here in Alabama to tour our bamboo groves. Today was her birthday and she said there was nothing she had rather be doing . She already has the love of bamboo.

Thanks again for your order and hope you had a safe trip back to Tennessee.

Tuesday  8/14/07

We made a return trip to Dallas, Texas. We are happy to be working with Mike Marshall of Green Earth Landscape and Design again. As you may recall, we provided the plants for his project at the Rave Theater in Hurst, Texas.

Mike had special ordered Phyllostachys viridis "Robert Young' for an installation. These plants were dug and stabilized for over two months before delivery today.

This delivery was to a real congested area. The plants had to be unloaded on the side of the street and carried to the planting site.

This project is going to be very beautiful with the the bamboo as an added feature to the amazing water features. The bright yellow color of the canes with be very complimentary.
Mike told us that this had been designed by his friend that was one of the climbers that did not make it off Mount Hood last winter. We really hated to hear that.

The workers was already getting the bamboo ready to be planted before we left.

We have really enjoyed working with Mike and hope to be of help with more
projects in the future.
Thanks so much for your repeat business and continued success on all your endeavors.

Rachel and I delivered some 15 gallon sizes of Phyllostachys nigra 'Henon' to Tim in Nashville today. Den and I are placing the plants in burlap and loading onto my truck below.

Harper wanted to help!

The plants are unwrapped and ready to unload. All the plants were 14 to 16 feet tall. P. nigra 'Henon' seems to do very well in Tennessee. There is also very large grove in Cherokee, North Carolina that has been there for many years.

Tim had a very beautiful backyard with several water features. He wanted to incorporated bamboo into his design. The bamboo will stay evergreen and make winter an even better season of the year.

Tim is standing with his new bamboo plants.
We really enjoyed meeting Tim and our trip to Nashville.
Thanks again for the order and hope you enjoy the bamboo for years to come.

Tuesday  8/08/07

Today was our second delivery to Jeff in Orlando, Florida. We delivered his first order the middle of June. Jeff owns one of the largest online pet supply stores in North America and is eager to have lots of bamboo.

Jeff ordered some three gallon containers of 'Allgold' that you can see on the right side above. He got all the 30 gallon containers of this species, we had available, on his last order.

These are some more of the field specimen plants that we delivered and also three gallon P. nigra 'Black' on the left side.

Jeff and I are talking about the different species of bamboo and what to expect in growth.

These are the plants that Jeff has already planted and you can also see the extensive watering system that he has installed. He had to have a well dug to provide all the water that his bamboo is going to need.

We really appreciate Jeff's repeat business and hope he enjoys the bamboo
as much as we do. As we said before,
It's nice to talk with people who
appreciated bamboo for all of it's potential and is making the earth a greener place to live.
Thanks again, Jeff
