Today, we had the pleasure to deliver to Mr. Imes in Kentucky. He had quite a shopping list of bamboo. If it was a species that would grow over 40 feet in height, he wanted it. His order consisted of eleven species with various colors and height. All the bamboo had one thing in common, they will get big at maturity.

Here Mr. Imes looking at the rhizome growth inside the root balls. This is essential for good bamboo growth. Mr. Imes' farm has been in his family since the great depression. It is a beautiful tract of land in which he grows crops, shrimp, various birds including peacocks, and now bamboo.  It was a pleasure to meet him and we appreciate the business. Below are some pictures of his beautiful land.

It is the start of another busy week. Today, Mr. Price, his son and his landscaper came out for a visit. He owns a wonderful house right on the beach in Pensacola, FL. The downfall with such great property is that you have hotels for neighbors. He has a 8 feet tall block wall, but need additional height to prevent vacationers from looking in on his property. Mr. Price decided to get some Field Specimens of Phyllostachys Nigra Henon 'Giant Gray', and Phyllostachy Moso. He also picked up some Phyllostachys Bissetii for a wind break for his cabana. We really appreciate your order and was glad to get to meet you. Thanks

Here we are loading up the truck for an order to Dallas, TX. This is a large order comprised of 15 and 30 gallon pots. Thanks goodness for lift gates, they are a back saver.

This is Dan's house. He decided bamboo would be the perfect choice to landscape this beautiful house. He chose Moso, Gray, Arrow, Black, Allgold, Green onion, Palmata, Fastuosa, and Koi bamboo to add beauty to his landscape.

This is some of the pictures of his bamboo. He is using it in multiple applications, from screening to ascetics. Also, Dan is using the Koi bamboo to ascent his Koi pond. Dan is world renowned for his championship Koi pictured below.

Here are some of his beauties in one of his Koi ponds. If you have never seen a $80,000 fish, it is quite a sight. These fish are exquisite and I definitely understand the allure.

Dan, already had a wonderful landscape, I can't image how good it will look once he gets the bamboo installed. Thanks for your order and I enjoyed getting to meet you and see all the wonder Koi.

News will be coming soon from our delivery to Dallas, Texas today. This was a large order and there will plenty of photos of this one. Close to 100 of the larger 15 gallon sizes are being delivered. They also picked out 7 of the 30 gallon sizes which weigh over 300 pounds each.

My father, the bamboo ringer, took time to help me show some customers around. He is retired now, but still loves bamboo. He enjoys to walk around the bamboo groves and share his knowledge of this wonderful plant.

Larry, Tere and Russell came down from Huntsville, Alabama at noon today for their visit. They will be returning soon for more, but we loaded all we could into their mini van.
They were a nice family and we really enjoyed their visit. We are looking forward to see them again.

Next week we are off to Kentucky for another large delivery.

3/21/2007 Wednesday

Stephen and Paddy came out to visit us today. They wanted privacy and erosion control. After the tour chose some specimens of  Phyllostachy Aurea for their screen. We will deliver it to their home once the site has been prepared. Look for more pictures coming soon.

Some of our neighbor from local Smith Lake came down today. They had found us through our Fox 6 News special. Smith Lake, once a sparsely populated area, now it has multiple story condos being built along with thousands of homes. This really cuts down on privacy. They came out for the tour and to buy some bamboo for a screen. They were  impressed how bamboo grew and that they were able to grow so many different kinds.

With a tour we take time to answer any and all question and show you details with the plants to foster better understanding of this unique plant. It is a lot easier to understand with examples present. Here, we are going over the growing habits of the rhizomes or root system of bamboo.

We encourage customers to take pictures and as you see there is always plenty of bamboo take photos of. We appreciate your order and hopes it provides the privacy you want.

Robert from North Carolina came to visit his sister in Alabama. She is a professor at the University of Alabama located in Tuscaloosa, AL. Our nursery if about 45 minutes from Tuscaloosa, but my home away from the nursery is in Tuscaloosa, although I don't get to see it much. Robert was in a time crunch so, we are always willing to help. I brought the plants home to load Robert up and get him back on the road faster.

Once, we had his trailer complete full, it was time to wrap it in a protective layer of plastic and secure it for the ride home. Robert was gin to have a good trek back, so we always make sure that the load is safe and protected.

Here is the finished product, ready for travel. Robert wanted plants to provide privacy to block out a new development starting around his house. The great price on the larger Phyllostachy Aurea will definitely allow him to do this. It is an affordable screening bamboo that also provides a great noise barrier. Thanks for your order Robert and it was nice to meet you.

We tried a new toy this week, a dump trailer. Hopefully, it will make our life simpler. You can click here to see more about our potting soil content. As you can see from the pictures, things don't always work out as planned and you still have to get sawdust in your shoes.

Here is the finished product. Please notice the water leak that was created under the pile. It was a bad week, but it is springtime so everything will be all right.

3/11/2007 Sunday

It has been a busy weekend. We had multiple customers and plenty of mail orders. We love this time of the year when everybody starts getting excited about bamboo. Below is pictures of Tim and his assistant who drove over from Atlanta to pick-up some Rubromarginata. These are our mail order size plants, but they drove over to save the shipping and handling charges. They were running behind, so we didn't have time for many pictures. We do appreciate your order and were glad that we could help.

Kevin and his family drove across from Ashville, AL today. Kevin wanted some giant bamboo and his wife desired a screening bamboo. Kevin wanted the biggest bamboo he could grow, so he purchased a 30 gallon Moso, root ball pictured on the left. This size and root mass will help him attain giant canes fast. Michelle decided on the Phyllostachys Aurea and Rubromarginata.  Kevin was also amazed by another bamboo, Phyllostachy Nigra Henon 'Giant Gray'. He also purchased one of these. It is a great species because it sizes up fast. Meaning that it doesn't take too many years before sizable shoots start emerging. This is a popular species that always sells outs. Here Kevin, Michelle, Cameron (son) and Amanda (daughter) pose as proud owners of their new bamboo. I enjoyed spending time with you and hope you enjoy your bamboo. -Thanks Roger

Today we delivered to Jeff in Pensacola, Florida. It was a great sunny day and Jeff lived in a beautiful historic section of town. This area was full of charming homes, some under renovations. Jeff desired privacy from the construction and for his pool.

The Phyllostachys Rubromarginata was selected because it is such a fast grower. If  you needed bamboo yesterday, this is your species.

Jeff had installed barrier that he had purchased from us.
His desire was to make a lush privacy screen, but he didn't want it to be too wide. The barrier was installed to make the bamboo grow thicker and screen faster. Barrier can accelerate the screening process because it only allows canes to emerge in the confined areas. Bamboo can be controlled by using many methods, but this is a maintenance free and faster way to shape your bamboo.

We appreciate the order and we hope you don't want to see that house anymore, because it will be gone shortly. Thanks for the order.

3/5/2007 Monday

We delivered to Mishael and Derrick today. If you remember, they came to visit us on January 31st. We dug their custom order of Phyllostachys Robert Young. Custom orders have to be stabilized for a month after being dug to ensure that the customer gets a great division. We delivered to their beautiful home just outside of  Stone Mountain, GA.

They built an ornate and tall fence to provide privacy, but wanted a little more height from their screen. The bamboo will be planted on top of the rock retaining wall and will provide excellent coverage from anybody trying to peek in.

Here Derrick is watering his new babies. We had a great time working with these customers and hope the bamboo is everything they wanted. Please let us know if we can be of any help in the future.

3/4/2007 Sunday

Adam Turtle, who owns 'Our Nursery' visited toady for some Indocalamus Latifolius. This is a beautiful short screening bamboo that he needed for one of his customers. Adam has done a lot of work for bamboo over the years. He and his wife, Sue, started the Southeast Chapter of the American Bamboo Society. With all the work he has done to get bamboo known, we are happy to be able to help him anytime we can.

3/2/2007 Thursday

Nolton visited us from outside Brownsville, Texas. He owns a nursery and was very excited to begin growing bamboo for future
customers. No local nurseries in his area offered bamboo. He had even traveled over 300 miles to Austin, Texas to look at a bamboo nursery. He decided to check us out and we are very pleased he chose us to help him with his bamboo.

I was running late so my father, Roger Sr. shown in this photo takes time to walk Nolton around the groves until I arrived.

Nolton wanted five to six species to begin his collection. He selected Phyllostachys decora, P. golden, P. rubromarginata, P. bambusoides, S. okuboi, Pl. linearis and P. nigra 'Black'.

Shown here in the P. decora, Nolton selected this species due to its size and drought hardiness. He turned to us for the species that we knew would tolerate his climate. In cases like his where soil composition and summer temperature are so important, we use our customer base to aid in suggestions. With thousands of customers and hundreds sending us updates on their bamboo throughout the U.S., we can tell you which ones are doing the best for your location.

With seven species picked out, we prepared to load them up for the long journey back to Texas. We decided to leave all the bamboo in the containers which were 3 and 5 gallon sizes. We placed each one into a plastic bag, added plenty of water and sealed them tight to hold the moisture in.

After they were all loaded, they were covered completely and  sealed up wind proof in a plastic tarp.

Thanks Nolton and we hope the trip home was a safe one.

My daughter, Harper, is walking and often running through the groves of bamboo where she can slip free from our grasp.

Like most lovely girls, she is a photo hound.
