Pseudosasa amabilis
Tonkin Cane, Tea Stick
Native to China, this is the famous flyrod bamboo. Not to be confused with a
cane poles which are typically made from Phyllostachy
Aurea. Amabilis or Tonkin cane has been used for over 100
years in the custom building of handmade split flyrods. The canes are
extremely straight, thick walled with non-prominent nodes. It also doesn't
taper as quickly as most bamboo canes does. It is
highly valued for its great wood. We sell out of this species nearly every
year by the end of Spring. It takes years for this species to mature,
but the wait is well worth it. Photos below are of our 8 year old
planting. The cane height is around 16 to 20 feet and is spreading very
well now.
