You too can have a great evergreen privacy screen. These two large
privacy screenings are an excellent example of containment by mowing.
The privacy screen below is 'Golden' bamboo. It was around 10 feet
wide and 200 feet in length.

'GOLDEN'

A prime choice for privacy screening. A fast grower in warm climate zones, but less aggressive in colder climates. It does grow in climate zone 6, but not aggressively. Provides a thick impenetrable grove when untrimmed. The culm nodes are compacted giving this species a great look on larger culms. On small plants and often on mature size culm this species has low growing limbs. This species is very drought hardy. Light green canes turning golden when exposed to sun light. The culms ( canes) are very strong and upright.

This beautiful bamboo will drop foliage when temps drop to around 5 degrees F. Canes will most likely be killed when temps drop to -5. Unless temps drop to -30 degrees F. the root system of established well mulched groves will put up new canes each Spring.

In USDA Climate Zone 7 expect mature size canes to be over 30 feet in height.
In USDA Climate Zone 6 expect mature size canes to be 16 feet in height. Top kill is reported on this species in zone 6 areas, however it will establish and produce nice groves in zones 6. I suggest the 'Golden' for zones 7 and warmer.

'BLACK'

This is one of the top five most sought after bamboo we provide. Plenty of pictures on this beauty. The legendary 'Black' is native to Taiwan and China it can withstand temps. to -4 F. Top and foliage damage occurs in the low teens during dry winds. New canes emerge green and turn ebony black within two years.

top kill during severe winters.

'DECORA'

     Referred to as Beautiful Bamboo in China. This is another very hardy bamboo growing very well as far north as Massachusetts. Hardy to -11F and can grow 40 feet and taller. Needs full sun to do its best. The new Spring shoots are a striking cream and violet color. This one likes all planting sites and has very erect canes with full foliage.

Since it is known to tolerate the hot and dry conditions of Arizona
and Nevada we sell out every year.

I recommend this species for USDA Climate Zones 6 and warmer.

'RUBRO'

One of our top picks for

privacy screening

     P. rubro has been the most sought after bamboo we supplied. It is growing throughout the southwest and midwestern states. Very cold hardy it has beautiful green canes with long nodes. This bamboo that makes a great screen and is growing well in climate zone 5. This one is doing well above 5000 feet in cold Denver, CO. The culm (cane) sheaths are olive color with fine reddish striping giving it the Red Margin name. The culm sheath borders have the pronounced red margin. This great bamboo will provide a screening effect in shaded areas and we have the groves to prove it!
     One of our customers in Shoal, Indiana reported his rubro did not drop leaves at -15 degrees F. from his 6 year old planting. It has already attained 20 feet in height.

Zone 7 in Prattville, Alabama it has reached 62 feet tall.

Zone 6 reports in 2004 of 35 feet heights X 2 plus inches in diameter with exposures to -12 degrees F. and has remained evergreen.

I recommend this species for USDA Climate Zones 5 and warmer.

'GIANT GRAY'

This bamboo is a giant and well suited to the hot middle and southwestern areas. We have been delivering the 'Giant Gray' out west for many years. We have sold and done follow up studies on 'Giant Gray' in several areas of the country. It has adapted well and reached over 3 inches diameter canes in USDA Climate Zone 6.   In zone 6 Cherokee, North Carolina it has reached almost mature sizes in the past 10 years. We personally have documented it doing well in Las Vegas, Nevada and even the Mirage Hotel is growing this beautiful bamboo and is currently ( 2005 ) reaching 1.5 inches in diameter by 24 feet tall.

I love this one not only for its size, but also its ability to grow great in shaded sites with poor soil and watering. Known best for its drought tolerance, once established, this giant is one impressive bamboo. From Guangdong Sichuan, China this cold hardy giant has very erect canes. Its new olive green canes turn to a gray color with age.

Phyllostachys bambusoides
'Giant Japanese Timber'

Prefers full sun

     This is the mother form. It looks the same as 'crookstem' except larger in subtropical climates and without the very slight bend of the cane on some specimens. This giant is slow to mature. In our experience, we find it best suited for climate zones zones 7 and 8. It does not need a cool dormant period like most other temperate species. The only large groves I have seen of this have been in these climate zones. There maybe large groves in cooler climates, but I have not seen them. Not as cold hardy as the ' slender crook stem it gets top damage here in zone 7 when temperatures drop into the low twenties. Completely defoliates at around 5 to 10 degrees F. Canes die from 0 to -5 degrees F. This species flowered during the 70's and into the early 80's. Mature groves are now hard to find and some sporadic flowering is still being reported. Some clones of this species are reported to be in flower intermittently without lost of the grove. Our clones are not in flower and we would not sell any that was. The slowest of the temperate species to size up in zone 7.

I recommend this species for USDA Climate Zones 7 and 8.

'ALLGOLD'

Hardy to 5 F this one is not recommended for areas
where the Winter temperatures drop into the single
digits.

Canes are entirely golden yellow with occasional thin green stripes.

'SLENDER CROOKSTEM'

Average mature size 3" x 50'    Hardy to 0 F

Great buy on these large fast growing timber bamboo.



The wood quality of all bambusoides species is excellent. Slender Crookstem is very straight
and the thick walled canes make it one of the toughest bamboo. Around 20% of the grove
will have a very slight bend located in the lower portion of the culm.

'TANAKAE'
Has to have full sun

This is one of the Bambusoides and does well in subtropical climates. This beautiful bamboo has canes that are marked with elliptical purplish and brown spots. The wood is like other bambusoides and is rock hard. The canes are excellent for wood crafts and and flute making. Click on photo for the picture page

'YELLOW GROOVE'

                                          One of our top picks for

privacy screening

     One of our top picks for very cold areas in need of privacy screening. I have measured this species at 46 feet and 2.6 inches in diameter in Southeast. We have customers growing this cold hardy species in parts of Minnesota. The culm (cane) sheaths are pale green with creamy streaks. Auricles and oral setae are present on mid culm. Can be absent on lower and upper portions of the culms. A very upright species at maturity. Less aggressive in cooler climates.


     This species is doing very well in the Missouri Botanical Gardens, Logan, Iowa and Grand Island Nebraska. One of our customers in zone 3b/4a Wisconsin where temperatures have gone to -30 reported his 'yellow groove' dies back in the Winter months. It comes back each Spring 6 to 8 feet tall from a 5 year old planting. Reports back to us this year that it is doing great at the University of Minnesota Arboretum.

'SPECTABILIS'

A beautiful collector species not commonly available. Not ones of the giants, but if you want a beautiful bamboo with coloration and super cold hardy this is it.

Very cold hardy with growing habits similar to 'Yellow Groove'. Bright yellow coloration of the canes with the green stripe in the sulcus grooves is absolutely beautiful. This species handles windy sites much better than 'Yellow Groove and is at the top of the list on cold hardiness.

BISSETII'

Once of the most cold hardy bamboo.
Perfect for Privacy Screening where height
must be restricted.

     We have customers through out colder climate zones growing this little beauty. A very cold hardy vigorous grower with dark gray green canes. Likes most all sites and soil conditions. The culm (cane) sheaths' auricles and oral setae are present with a narrow blade. Mature culms are erect and usually in the 16 to 18 foot height range. Has a very dense dark green foliage making it an excellent choice for privacy and windbreaks. This species is being grown very well at the Denver Zoo which is above a cold 5000 feet elevation.

'NUDA'

      Hardy to -20 F   Being grown in Colorada zone 4

     This is the most cold hardy of the running bamboo and the roots can survive to - 30 F. when established and mulched well. It has very dark green erect canes with the powdery white nodal ring present on new growth. This is the one for all of you that live where it is really cold.

    You cannot expect it to reach mature sizes in USDA Climate Zone 4, but it is well suited for those areas way up north. Average heights of 12 to 18 feet in colder areas can be expected at maturity. The culm (cane) sheath is gray/wine colored with no auricles or oral setae. In zone 4 Idaho we have reports of this species doing great. There is some foliage drop, but new canes have came back even when temps. have gone to -30F.

'DWARF BISSETII'

     Very similar to typical P. bissetii, the mother form. In some sites matures at less height than typical P. bissetii. A very cold hardy vigorous grower with dark green canes. Often matures under 18 feet in height in colder climate zones making it an excellent low screening bamboo.

'AUREOCAULIS'
'GREEN STRIPE VIVAX '

VERY RARE

     A rare collector species and has not been in the U.S. long. Therefore, not many groves have been established long enough to furnish nice divisions. Careful on your source with this one. This giant vivax has giant bright yellow canes, with occasional dark green stripes. The oral setae and auricles are absent from the culm sheaths. There is also white pin striping on many of the green leaves. As always with giant timber species, it is difficult to produce small 2 and 3 gallon sizes. That is why availability is very limited. I have a waiting list for this one.

'TESSELLATUS'


     Shrub bamboo under 12 feet in height. It has the largest leaves of any bamboo in cultivation at the present time. It adapts to all planting sites. They can be up to 24 " X 4" They are truly large leaves and have many uses. For example Chinese and Japanese have used them in cooking by wrapping food in them prior to steaming. They also are currently being used in floral arrangements.
     This species is used in many countries for erosion control along flood plains. It makes a great indoor container plant since it adapts to low lighting very well. One of our groves has reached 12 feet in height along the river side of the grove. It has thousands of rhizomes (roots) hanging over in the water picking up just whatever water it needs through out our hot summer months. On new plantings this species will get leaf damage at around 0 to 5 degrees F. On older established groves it will remain evergreen to -10 with very little foliage damage.

'KUMASACA'

A short bamboo usually matures under 7 feet in height. Hardy to -10F. Short wide leaves grow right off the slender canes of this bamboo offering a non typical appearance. The perfect site is in a shaded area with acid soil. It can be planted under or around pine trees and does very well.

'RIVERCANE'

     This species is the native bamboo and once covered thousand of acres in North America. It is very cold hardy and worth adding to your collection because of its beauty and native status. Adapts well to all sites and even handles erosion problems. It was naturally found along streams and rivers through out the south. This bamboo will grow from 12 to 20 feet in the Southeast.

'SWITCHCANE'

Average mature size   . 5 " x    8 '      Hardy to -10 F        Adapts to full Sun or deep Shade
     This great bamboo is a little brother to the above native gigantea. Good for any site since it is suited to any light conditions and swampy areas. There are air channels in the roots which allows it to handle soggy soil conditions. In deep shade, it remains under three feet in height, but in full sun it will grow to over 8 feet. This little bamboo will grow from 3 to 8 feet in most all of the Southeast.

'PALMATA'

     This little bamboo from Japan really adds the tropical feel to any garden. Its leaves are arranged in a palm shaped fashion. With its leaves measuring up to 15 inches long by 2.5 inches wide, it is a great addition to any garden. Handles all planting sites with wind and drought conditions not being a problem. Young shoots can be eaten and the foliage is highly used in decorations. I have two reports back now from 4 year plantings in zone 5 that is one has remained evergreen to -10 to -15 degrees. This one is doing well in several parts of Connecticut. It will grow from 5 to 7 feet in most all areas of the Southeast.
