Hibanobambusa tranquilians

Average mature size   1.25 " x  16'      Hardy to  -4  F
Prefers Sunny Site

This bamboo from Japan has large leaves measuring up to 10 inches long by 1.25 inches in width.  With very little leaf drop it is used around water features
extensively. It is thought to be a hybridization from a Phyllostachys and Sasa. Likes most all planting sites and is drought hardy. Another aggressive runner in warm climate zones, but very tame in colder climates. Our grove is around 8 to 10 feet in height after 8 years.

I recommend this species for USDA Climate Zones 6 and warmer.

Beautiful Leaves

The heavily variegated foliage of this bamboo is outstanding and is one we always show off. With very little drop of its variegated leaves it is used around water features extensively. From Japan, South Honshu, this beauty likes all locations. Its  foliage withstands the cold and handles drought very well. Long variegated leaves with creamy white coloration are just beautiful! An aggressive runner in warm climates with large leaves measuring 10 "  X  1.25 ".  We currently have some canes in the 12 foot height range after 8 years.  A real beauty that I am generally sold out of.  Check during the Winter months with us on this one because by the time Spring comes  around all are sold.

I recommend this species for USDA Climate Zones 6 and warmer.

This rare bamboo has the distinct characteristic of having solid canes. The dark green leaves can be up to 10 inches in length. It has very lush foliage providing complete privacy from one foot to 8 feet off the ground.

'GIANT LEAF'

Great Privacy Screening under 10 feet
Average mature size   . 5 " x   10 '      Hardy to  -10 F
Sun to Shaded Site

This bamboo has the largest leaves of any bamboo in cultivation at the present time. It adapts to all planting sites. They can be up to 24 " X 4" They are truly large leaves and have many uses. For example Chinese and Japanese have used them in cooking by wrapping food in them prior to steaming. They also are currently being used in floral arrangements.

This species is used in many countries for erosion control along flood plains. It makes a great indoor container plant since it adapts to low lighting very well. One of our groves has reached 12 feet in height along the river side of the grove. It has thousands of rhizomes (roots) hanging over in the water picking up just whatever water it needs through out our hot summer months. On new plantings this species will get leaf damage at around 0 to 5 degrees F. On older established groves it will remain evergreen to -10 with very little foliage damage.

I recommend this species for USDA Climate Zones 5 and warmer.

This little bamboo from Japan really adds the tropical feel to any garden. Its leaves are arranged in a palm shaped fashion. With its leaves measuring  up to 15 inches long by 2.5 inches wide, it is a great addition to any garden. Handles all planting sites with wind and drought conditions not being a problem. Young shoots can be eaten and the foliage is highly used in decorations. I have two reports back now from 4 year plantings in zone 5 that is one has remained evergreen to -10 to -15 degrees.

At this time I still would recommend this species for USDA Climate Zones 6 and warmer.

The foliage of this one is its lure. From Japan this bamboo has large leaves that turn white along the margins in the fall while the rest of the leaf stays green. From south west Honsku, Japan this species is widely used in gardens now. Its winter foliage is breathe taking. Plant this one in the shade and it can handle a lot of moisture.  Difficult to transplant this one, so availability is generally very limited.

I recommend this species for USDA Climate Zones 6 and warmer.
