| Rubromarginata is an excellent choice for privacy screening in colder climate zones because of its fast growth, cold hardiness and ability to withstand cold dry winds. It is named for the small red margins of coloration on all the new edible shoots. |
An extensive government study done by the University of Auburn agriculture department showed it to be superior in culm/rhizome production. The university tested twenty seven species over a thirty year period and found it be dramatically superior over the other bamboo tested in the genus. We have found this species to be a healthy and strong grower. It is one of the best species if you want to have a bamboo grove or screen fast. |
![]() | The beautiful canes are highly sought after for use in arts and crafts. The long inter nodal spaces can reach up to 22 inches on mature canes. The hard wood of this species make it an excellent timber bamboo. It's name is derived from the beautiful red markings on the new spring shoots. | ![]() |
This grove is doing an excellent job of hiding the 'neighbor' most all of us have. This is one of our customer's house. Customer reports from as far back as 1998 keep us informed on rubro. all over the U.S. In zone 6 it has attained 35 feet in height X 2 plus inches in diameter while being exposed to -12 degrees F. |
![]() | One of our customers in Shoal, Indiana reported his rubro did not drop leaves at -15 degrees F. from his 6 year old planting. It has already attained 20 feet in height. RRubro's thick lush foliage is always present on groves established in full sun. |

If you are fortunate enough to have a nice extended driveway like this, then bamboo is great. Starter divisions of bamboo can be spaced along the drive and allowed to fill in the entire length. |
![]() | Beautiful and very well maintained, this bamboo offers so much to this urban home. Homes in this area have sparsely planted shade trees and large lawns requiring extensive up keep. Within 4 years this bamboo planting brought nature back to this previously cleared lot. Strolling down their driveway to get the mail, the owners enjoy birds and the rustling of the bamboo. |

Once established it grows very dense and produces hundreds of canes close together. This planting is among large oak and poplar trees towering 80 feet above the bamboo. P. rubro is very cold tolerant (-10 to -15 degrees F.) and tolerates cold, dry winds making it an excellent wind screening bamboo. It grows to a height varying from 30 to 65 feet and up to 3.5 inch diameter depending on your location. Even in colder areas this species can reach over 30 feet in height. Below photo shows some of the hundreds of rubro potted in 2, 3 and 15 gallon containers. The larger 15 gallon sizes are $90 each. |
