Best Screening Bamboo

A prime choice for privacy screening or a bamboo fence. A  fast grower in warm climate zones, but less aggressive in colder climates. It is growing well in New York's climate zone 6. Provides a thick impenetrable grove when untrimmed. The culm nodes are compacted giving this species a great look on larger culms. On small plants and often on mature size culm this species has low growing limbs. This species is very drought hardy. Light green canes turning golden when exposed to sun light. The culms ( canes) are very strong and upright. The culms sheaths are pale/green to pale/red. The auricles and oral setae are absent from the sheaths.   
     In colder regions, this species forms  tight groves versus the more open groves  in warmer climate zones. Culms are excellent wood quality and the new shoots are edible. In some micro climates of zone 6, this species does not remain evergreen. This beautiful bamboo will drop foliage when temps drop to around 5 degrees F. Canes will most likely be killed when temps drop to -5. Unless temps drop to -30 degrees F. the root system of established well mulched groves will put up new canes each Spring. 
I recommend this species for USDA Climate Zones 6 and warmer.

Beautiful 'Golden' bamboo above is used for privacy to screen out their neighbors. This large privacy screen is controlled just by mowing the yard like they did even before the bamboo was ever planted. While the bamboo rhizomes or roots extend out into the yard it can never establish growth there since each new shoot or cane is mowed during biweekly yard maintenance. This grove is 12 to 14 feet wide and 200 feet in length.
This beautiful evergreen bamboo is used extensively for screening. At maturity the culms grow close together and with it's thick foliage provides an excellent visual and sound barrier. It was the first Phyllostachys introduced into the United States (Alabama in 1882).Culms are excellent wood quality and the new shoots are edible.

Even with a small amount of planting space, this plant can provide a great screen. This planting has been confined to a 3 foot planting area and provides total privacy.Golden Bamboo

The short swollen internodes at the base of the culms (canes) makes it easily identified. These are also striking characteristics of this species. 

 
 
The culms are green but turn golden with sunlight and age. The culms ( canes) are very strong and upright. The culms sheaths are pale/green to pale/red. The auricles and oral setae are absent from the sheaths.  This bamboo can grow to a height of 30 feet with a diameter of 2 inches and has a minimum temperature of 0 F. degrees. Here in the southeast Phyllostachys aurea can grow to over 40 feet in height.

Phyllostachys aurea is perfect for use as privacy screens or sound barriers because of it's low growing branches and the culms that grow tightly together. A grove or large row of P. aurea is almost impenetrable. It is an aggressive running bamboo that will provide a relatively quick screen.

with age and sunlight. This bamboo does excellent in USDA Climate Zone 7 and 8. It does
 marginal in climate zone 6 reaching about one half its maximum mature size.
