Cold hardy bamboo that can tolerate wetland areas.

This bamboo is sought after and we always sell out each year. One of the few Phyllostachys species suited to wetland sites and is very cold hardy. This bamboo actually has air channels within the roots which allows it to adapt to wet soil sites. Culms (canes) are green, nodes are very pronounced and the canes taper. Very upright culms and often are said to produce a perfume odor within an enclosed area.  The culm sheath is short with a very triangular blade. The sheath's auricles and oral setae are absent. Excellent landscaping bamboo for damp planting sites. When the canes of this species is rubbed it gives off a slight scent of incense giving it the nick name   'Incense Bamboo.

Phyllostachys atrovaginataThis bamboo was formerly known as Congesta before a name change to Atrovaginata by the American Bamboo Society. This is a shorter bamboo at maturity than most bamboos of this genus. Congesta is a straight bamboo with limbs that run almost perpendicular to the cane. It has a darker foliage than many bamboos and is very hardy. It can withstand temperatures down to -15 degrees.
This bamboo has a common name of 'Incense Bamboo'. The canes are stated to be able to give off a pleasant scent. The canes usually have to be scratched to produce an incense smell. Similar to sandalwood if you have an active imagination. Congesta bamboo
Congesta groveCongesta can tolerate high water table and wetland areas. This makes it a perfect plant for those questionable locations. In the picture to the left, you can see it planted in a low area on the nursery with a pond behind it.

Most all bamboo shoots are edible when prepared but this bamboo has a mild taste compared to many when consumed in the raw state. This bamboo has many attributes that separates it from most bamboo making it a great bamboo to add to any landscape.
