Phyllostachys bissetii is a vigorous growing species whose culms are a striking dark green. This is one of the first Phyllostachys to put up new canes in the Spring.
A new P. bissetii culm
A culm on the outside of a grove. The culms (canes) are a beautiful green within the grove.  Culms receiving more direct sunlight often turn a light golden color. Bissetii is one of the most cold hardy species growing in North America withstanding temperatures down to -15 degrees F.. The root system, when mulched properly, will handle temps down to -25 degrees F..
Here is a great example of P. bissetii used as a privacy screen. This shorter growing bamboo matures at 18 to 23 feet making it suitable for many applications. Since it is so cold hardy it is grown in many colder regions of the country such as climate zones 4 and 5. Even during severe winters this little bamboo, once established, will pop up beautiful new canes in the early spring long before other plants even turn green. Native to Szechwan, China it has been growing here since 1941.Phyllostachys bissetii growing on both sides of this road.
Small cold hardy screening bambooP. bissetii is very cold hardy and makes a great privacy screen for colder climates. This species has been growing for over 12 years at the Denver Zoo.  The zoo is a climate zone 5 and above 5000 feet in elevation.  At this site bissetii reaches only 10 to 12 feet in height by .50 inch diameter. It will remain evergreen once the rhizome system is well established.
