Arundinaria - A Small to medium bamboo with numerous branches at each node. (Running Bamboo)

Arundinaria  funghomii

Average mature size   1.75 " x  30'   Hardy to  0 F
 Prefers Sunny Site

This hard to find species is very attractive with the new canes having a gray coloring then turning a red coloration. It is going to be one of my favorites with this color culms and the very dense foliage on multiple branches at each node.  It reaches 4 to 6 feet in cold climates, but much taller here in the southern states.

I recommend this species for USDA Climate Zones 6 and warmer.

Arundinaria gigantea 'CANEBREAK'
 'RIVERCANE'

               Average mature size  1" x   20 '  Hardy to  -10 F
  Prefers Sunny Sites

This species is the native bamboo and once covered thousand of acres in North America. It is very cold hardy and worth adding to your collection because of its beauty and native status. Adapts well to all sites and even handles erosion problems. It was naturally found along streams and rivers through out the south.  Adapts well to swampy and damp planting sites.

Gigantea is growing at the Denver Zoo, USDA Climate Zone 5, and has attained .75 inch diameter canes by 6 to 7 feet in height after 12 years of establishment. While it will not mature at the taller heights of warmer climate zones,  it makes an excellent short screening bamboo for very cold climate zones in high elevations.

I recommend this species for USDA Climate Zones 5 and warmer.

 Arundinaria gigantea 'tecta'

'SWITCHCANE'

Average mature size   . 5 " x    8 '      Hardy to  -10 F
Adapts to full Sun or deep Shade

This great bamboo is a little brother to the above native gigantea. Good  for any site since it is suited to any light conditions and swampy areas. There are air channels in the roots which allows it to handle soggy soil conditions. In deep shade, it remains under three feet in height, but in full sun it will grow to over 8 feet.

I recommend this species for USDA Climate Zones 5 and warmer.
